Many sexual harassment and bullying cases in school have been “swept under the rug”, Education Ministry director-general Azam Ahmad said.
Nevertheless, he said the incidents must be reported and that it was his responsibility to bring them to light to prevent their recurrence.
“If everything is to be swept under the carpet, it seems like only good things exist... but in reality, something (bad) is happening.
“This is like an atomic bomb just waiting to explode. It is indeed sad, and in the three months I have held office as director-general, I have collected a lot of data on this,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.
He was speaking at the launch of the Anti-Bullying Campaign Programme organised by the police in Kuala Lumpur today.
On Oct 2, four teenagers in Malacca were arrested for allegedly raping a Form Three student in a classroom.
Police obtained a six-day remand order against the suspects on Oct 11. They are being investigated under Section 375B of the Penal Code for gang rape.
Information overflow
Commenting further, Azam warned school administrators as well as state and district education directors to play stronger roles when it comes to organising strategies over the education system and inculcating character in students.
“They need to be more energetic and strategic in managing this matter because children today are not like before, where we lacked information.
“Today, there is too much information overflowing, to the point that it threatens people, including students,” he said.
He also expressed happiness when such issues come out in the open and attract public attention.
“From the attention, we are beginning to realise that there is a need for new initiatives for us to develop programmes to educate the young generation today,” he said. - Mkini
