PAS Supporters’ Congress (DHPP) chief Balasubramaniam Nachiappan has questioned the government’s priorities after a minister admitted using his authority to expedite citizenship applications for several football players linked to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) controversy.
He said the move highlighted possible abuse of power and double standards, as thousands of Malaysian Indians born and raised in the country still struggle to obtain citizenship despite decades of loyalty and contribution.
“If power can be used to expedite the citizenship process for a handful of individuals on the basis of sports or personal connections, why are thousands of Malaysian Indians who were born, raised, and have lived here for decades still being denied their right to citizenship?” he said.
“They pay taxes, work hard, and obey the law, yet they are still treated as ‘foreigners’ in their own homeland. The irony is that while a minister can use his power to expedite the process for selected individuals, loyal citizens are left waiting indefinitely,” he remarked.
Balasubramaniam urged the government to address the issue comprehensively, calling it a matter of justice and dignity, not politics. Earlier, the Home Ministry confirmed approving seven players’ naturalisation following a FIFA probe into falsified heritage documents. — Focus Malaysia
