Selangor Royal Office shares ex-auditor-general's statement on Kg Sg Baru

The Selangor Royal Office has shared a media statement by former auditor-general Ambrin Buang regarding the disputed status of Kampung Sungai Baru in Kuala Lumpur.

In his statement dated Oct 1, Ambrin asserted that the village is part of a Malay Agricultural Settlement (MAS) and therefore cannot be converted into a non-Malay area.

According to the Selangor Royal Office, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah read Ambrin’s statement concerning Kampung Baru and the development issues surrounding Kampung Sungai Baru.

No further comments were issued.

Ambrin, a native of Kampung Baru, is a former Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (PKB) chairperson and a member of the Selangor Royal Council.

He said that the land in Kampung Sungai Baru originally formed part of the gazetted MAS land, based on a 1901 gazette.

“In fact, if we refer to the gazette dated Feb 16, 1932, it clearly shows that the area of land under the MAS gazette is situated on the right bank of the Klang River downstream,” he said.

Ambrin pointed out that the MAS gazettement was maintained even when the land use was changed for Malay residential purposes, according to historical records by MAS honorary secretary John Hand, who served between 1933 and 1941.

“The gazettement as MAS land remains in force to this day,” he added.

PKB says otherwise

However, Ambrin’s statement contradicted the clarification PKB issued last month through a list of frequently asked questions, one of which stated:

Question: Is Kampung Sungai Baru located within MAS?

Answer: No. Based on the title records, Kampung Sungai Baru does not carry any MAS endorsement, and the land tenure in Kampung Sungai Baru is a 99-year leasehold.

The village became embroiled in controversy after a group of residents refused to relocate.

On Sept 11, tensions flared during the eviction process, during which a senior police officer’s face and head were reportedly bloodied after being struck by a stone.
