Amanah MP suggests splitting Home Ministry, offers to be minister

PARLIAMENT | An Amanah MP today suggested that the Home Ministry be split into two separate ministries and offered to lead one as an additional minister, alongside Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Sany Hamzan (Harapan-Hulu Langat) said this was because the ministry presently oversees nine agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police, which has over 134,000 personnel.

He compared this number to the Defence Ministry, which oversees a smaller military force.

“The defence ministry only oversees one agency. But the police alone have 134,000 personnel, and there are nine agencies or departments under the Home Ministry.

“I would like to request that the Home Ministry be split into two ministries, because it supervises nine major departments. I would like to urge the honourable prime minister to consider this split if possible.

“If there is no minister, I am available. If splitting is not possible, then I request that the Home Ministry have two deputy ministers.

“If there’s also no candidate for the second deputy minister, I am available. Because from my perspective, this ministry is far too large,” Sany (above) added during the debate session on the Supply Bill for the Home Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.

However, his lighthearted suggestion was met with laughter from several MPs.

‘How will you answer?’

Following this, Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (PN-Sik) interjected, raising the issue of cybercrime cases, which he claimed had risen significantly.

“So how will the ministry address this issue? When the police themselves lack advanced technological tools and access to data from banks and so on?

“So how will this ‘future minister’ answer? How will you resolve a problem that increases day by day?” he questioned.

Sany replied that he could answer the question once he is sworn in as minister.

“It seems the other side (opposition) also wants me to become minister.

“Wait until I’m sworn in as minister, then I will answer Sik’s question,” he added.

For the record, besides the Royal Malaysia Police, the Home Ministry is also responsible for the Immigration Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, National Registration Department, Film Censorship Board, Registrar of Societies and the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department.  - Mkini
