BUSINESSMAN Albert Tei, whose real name is Tei Jiann Cheing, was remanded for six days starting today to assist the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in investigating a leaked video clip containing his conversation with a woman known as Sofia Rini Buyong.
Magistrate Fatin Muneerah Sofian granted the remand order this morning after hearing MACC’s application. Tei was brought to the Putrajaya Court Complex in an MACC van together with former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
The remand application against Shamsul Iskandar is still ongoing. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki yesterday described Tei as the most crucial individual in the probe involving Shamsul Iskandar.
Yesterday, MACC said the arrest of Albert Tei was due to his alleged refusal to cooperate with investigators probing corruption allegations. Azam Baki said Tei was initially scheduled to present himself to investigators on Dec 1, but the commission instructed him to appear earlier.
Tei has also been served a Section 28A(9) notice, denying him access to lawyers or third parties during the investigation. Sofia Rini was remanded for four days beginning yesterday.
