Fizzy, but not boozy: Ministry denies serving alcohol at event

The Housing and Local Government Ministry has clarified that the drink rumoured to be alcohol at its event was, in fact, just a “cucumber apple slider” - completely booze-free.

The ministry also strongly denied viral claims that tried to turn stemmed glasses into a scandal at the Minister’s Excellence Awards on Nov 8.

“The ‘cucumber apple slider’ served to guests is a carbonated soft drink and contains no alcohol.

“Its presentation in stemmed glasses is in line with standard catering practices typically used for formal events,” the ministry explained.

The ministry stressed that misleading rumours not only harm the ministry’s image but also the reputation of its guests.

The ministry added that it had filed a report with the MCMC to investigate the allegations further.

“The public is advised to refer to the ministry first and not make any speculation without verification.

“The ministry remains committed to ensuring that all events comply with guidelines, uphold integrity, and respect community sensitivities,” it added.

This incident comes in the wake of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing coming under fire after alcohol was served at the Tourism Malaysia’s Global Travel Meet event last month.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim rebuked Tiong over the matter and indicated that he did not accept the latter’s explanation that the gala dinner was not a "government event".

Subsequently, Tiong acknowledged that he erred in not informing that the event was handled by the private sector, not the government. - Mkini
