PETALING JAYA: Asfia Awang Nassar, who is already the longest-serving speaker of a legislature in Malaysia, has been appointed to a 10th consecutive term in the Sarawak assembly.
Asfia, of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, was appointed to a new two-year term which will last until Nov 15, 2027, Dayak Daily reported.
He first took on the post of speaker on Nov 15, 2000. Asfia was formerly an assemblyman for Sarawak Barisan Nasional, representing the Kuala Rajang state constituency in 1979-1983, Serdeng in 1991-2006 and Semop in 2006-2011.
He is already recognised as being the longest-serving speaker in the Commonwealth.
In 2023, he served briefly as acting governor of Sarawak when the then governor, the late Abdul Taib Mahmud, spent extended time abroad. - FMT
