'Nature & Humanity' replacing science, music subjects for Std 1

The Education Ministry will be introducing a new multidisciplinary subject for Standard One pupils starting in the 2027 school year.

The subject, titled “Alam dan Manusia: Pembelajaran Bersepadu” (Nature and Humanity: Integrated Learning), is set to replace four subjects: Science, Health Education, Visual Arts, and Music.

The new subject will be taught using a team-based method, where two teachers will be teaching in the class simultaneously, the ministry said in a social media post today.

“This subject integrates multiple disciplines, science, health education, music, visual arts, TVET, and digital skills.

“It will be taught using a team-teaching method. Team teaching supports the multidisciplinary nature of this subject, as teachers complement one another and address pupils’ learning needs collaboratively.

“Two teachers are required to be in the classroom at the same time during teaching and learning sessions to plan, teach, and assess together,” the ministry said.

It stated that this teaching method comes with multiple benefits, which would support students’ personalised learning needs, ensure quality teaching and learning, and reinforce the multidisciplinary elements by having teachers complement one another.

The ministry also stressed that mastering literacy, numeracy, and character-building skills will remain the primary focus for Standard One education, and that the number of subjects taught is kept to a minimum to ensure pupils can develop essential foundational skills.

Earlier this week, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced that the ministry will introduce a comprehensive student character development initiative in 2026, utilising an integrated approach embedded within existing subjects.

The initiative was planned to be incorporated into daily lessons to strengthen students’ moral values and character through practical application.

Fadhlina added that the initiative will first be implemented for preschool students next year before being expanded to Standard One pupils and subsequently to higher levels. - Mkini
