Stray elephant calf safely relocated to Johor sanctuary

KOTA TINGGI: Rangers from the Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) successfully relocated a stray elephant calf in Kampung Felda Air Tawar 3 early this morning.

The calf, believed to have become separated from its herd, was discovered by villagers who kept a safe watch and provided food while awaiting the arrival of wildlife authorities.

Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the calf was transported to the Johor Elephant Sanctuary in Kota Tinggi.

"The public should not approach wildlife, even if it appears cute or harmless. Calves are often accompanied by adult elephants nearby, which can pose serious danger," he said.

Footage shared by villagers showed the calf lingering near homes before Perhilitan rangers arrived to safely guide it into the transport vehicle.

Ling said the relocation operation was carried out to ensure the welfare of both the elephant and the local community.

"There are ongoing efforts to manage human-wildlife interactions in Johor, particularly in areas adjacent to elephant habitats," he added. - NST
