Tun Faisal denies purged Bersatu members given another chance

Bersatu denied claims that it is giving “chances” to suspended and expelled leaders, insisting that such members will still have to go through the relevant appeals processes.

The opposition party’s information chief, Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz, clarified that the alleged leniency towards party figures hit with disciplinary action was not discussed during the latest supreme council meeting on Nov 4.

“Reports citing a Bersatu ‘internal source’ claiming that the matter was discussed in the meeting are untrue and misleading,” he said in a statement today.

He added that Clause 22.6 of the party constitution states that any member found guilty and penalised by the disciplinary board may submit an appeal within the stipulated period.

The appeals board will then consider and decide on the appeal in accordance with the powers granted to it under the party constitution.

Move to resolve infighting

Yesterday, a source reportedly claimed that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had agreed to appoint Noh Omar as “consultative council” chairperson.

The supreme council member was said to have been tasked with formulating and implementing approaches to resolve internal conflicts within Bersatu while restoring public trust in the party.

The source asserted that Noh had proposed that the disciplinary board’s decisions be reviewed by nullifying all charges and penalties imposed.

The allegations come after the Bersatu disciplinary board suspended Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for one term and sacked Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan on Oct 14.

Four party division chiefs were also sacked by the Perikatan Nasional component party.

The board said it found the leaders guilty of violating the party constitution and its code of ethics and conduct.

While the board did not detail the violations, it is believed that Wan Saiful and the four division leaders were expelled in connection with a recent attempt to pressure Muhyiddin into handing over party leadership to his deputy, Hamzah Zainudin. - Mkini
