Any proposals to recognise UEC must align with the Constitution, says J-Kom DG

TAIPING: Any proposals for recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) must align with the Constitution, said Community Communications Department (J-Kom) director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop.

He stressed that those submitting such proposals must have a clear understanding of the nation’s history and the Constitution, which serves as the foundation for unity among all Malaysians.

"Whatever actions are proposed, they must not deviate from what is outlined in the Constitution, as it is the bedrock that unites us as one nation,” he said, commenting on the calls for the government to recognise the UEC.

Ismail told reporters this after officiating the J-Kom Madani Adopted Village Programme launch at Surau Aziziah, Kampung Sungai Mati here on Saturday (Dec 13).

He added that all provisions in the Constitution, including the status of Islam as the official religion and Bahasa Melayu as the official language, must be respected.

"Islam is the official religion of the Federation, while other religions may be practised, this is permitted. Bahasa Melayu is the official language of the Federation, and other languages may be learned. However, whatever the matter, in my opinion, we must stay within these boundaries,” he added.

On Friday (Dec 12), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that any claims that lead to religious, ethnic, and racial sensitivities must take into account the position of the national language in the country’s Constitution.

He added that the principles contained in the Federal Constitution regarding the position of Bahasa Melayu will continue to be upheld and defended.- Bernama
