The Health Ministry is targeting RM3 billion in revenue from the medical tourism sector this year, with the arrival of 2.5 million health tourists, said its minister Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He said the target considers the current momentum, following 1.6 million health tourists generating RM2.72 billion in revenue last year.
He added that this confidence was reinforced ahead of the Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism (MYMT) 2026, with the ministry prepared to enhance service capacity and quality to attract more international patients.
“This is our projection. We believe we can even outperform this revenue target. We will strive to achieve such KPIs,” he said during a press conference at the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH) 2025 awards ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today.
He added that this projection is part of a broader strategy to establish Malaysia as the region’s preferred destination for high-value medical treatment.
In his opening speech, Dzulkefly noted that the introduction of the FMTH Awards has strengthened Malaysia’s position as a leading global destination for medical tourism, a milestone that reflects the nation’s ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and high-quality service.
He emphasised that the sector remains a vital and non-negotiable pillar of long-term economic resilience, while also significantly enhancing the country’s international reputation for quality healthcare.
He added that this strategic initiative, led by the Health Ministry and the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council, has reinforced the country’s standing as a preferred destination for world-class medical treatment, wellness, and recovery.
Ahead of MYMT 2026, Dzulkefly said Malaysia is well-positioned to accelerate growth in the healthcare travel ecosystem through innovation, talent development, and a culture of excellence.
“Through innovation, talent development, and a steadfast culture of excellence, this industry is poised to not only boost economic growth but also advance our collective vision for a healthcare system that is inclusive, compassionate, and globally respected.
“Our ongoing commitment to developing the healthcare travel ecosystem demonstrates the government’s determination to build a competitive, sustainable, and inclusive economy,” he concluded.
