Karamunting assemblyperson Alex Wong Tshun Khee defended himself after a viral video showed him struggling to take his oath of office in the national language.
The swearing-in ceremony yesterday saw the Warisan lawmaker struggling to pronounce certain words, leading the Sabah assembly speaker to intervene and help him.
Asked about the matter, Wong said he was struggling as the notes he was referring to were written in small fonts, adding that the sudden drop in temperature in the state assembly only made his predicament worse.
“It suddenly became very cold. The writings were also too small,” he told Malaysiakini in a WhatsApp message in Malay.
To prove that he is fluent in Malay, Wong produced a TikTok video for Malaysiakini, which runs about three minutes, showing him speaking the language fluently and casually during his campaigning in the Sabah polls on three different occasions.
There was also a video of him speaking about his manifesto for Karamunting in Malay.
Among others, Wong raised concerns over water supply disruption.
“As for my manifesto for Karamunting, we must address the water issue.
“And we will find a way to resolve this within six months.” - Mkini
