PETALING JAYA: The Foreign Affairs Ministry, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo, has yet to receive any reports of Malaysians affected by the earthquake on Monday (Dec 8).
Wisma Putra, in a media advisory, stated that it is closely monitoring the situation following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck northeastern Japan at 11:15 PM (local time).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 54 km, approximately 80 km off the coast of Aomori Prefecture. Tsunami warnings were issued but have since been lifted.
“The Embassy remains in close communication with local authorities and is monitoring developments closely,” it said.
The ministry also advised Malaysians residing in or travelling in the affected areas to remain vigilant, avoid coastal regions and follow official guidance from Japanese authorities.
“Malaysians are also strongly encouraged to register their presence with the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo to ensure timely communication and assistance when required,” said the ministry.
For consular assistance, Malaysians can contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo at +81-3-3476-3840 for general inquiries and +81-80-4322-3366 for emergencies only. Alternatively, you can email consular.tyo@kln.gov.my.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry also says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. - Star
