Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz has hit out at a party supreme council member, Yunus Nurdin, who echoed calls for party president Muhyiddin Yassin to resign following a purported dispute with PAS over Perikatan Nasional’s future leadership.
Yunus, in a statement today, also voiced direct support for Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin to temporarily take over Muhyiddin’s position within the party.
“Instead of asking Muhyiddin to step down, it would be better for Yunus to ask the deputy president (Hamzah) to resign over his past failures in carrying out his duties and responsibilities,” Tun Faisal (above) told Malaysiakini.
“For example, when he (Hamzah) served as the election director for Sabah, as well as his failure to control the conduct of his supporters who have repeatedly violated the party constitution and discipline since 2025,” he said.
In the last Sabah election, PN, through Bersatu and PAS, contested 42 out of 73 seats, but only won one through the latter’s candidate, Aliakbar Gulasan, in Karambunai.

Hamzah had publicly denied on multiple occasions that there was a rift with Muhyiddin, including during Bersatu’s annual general assembly last year.
However, the parliamentary opposition leader continued to be linked to internal dissent believed to have led to disciplinary actions.
These include the sacking of two MPs - Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor) and Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota) - as well as the suspension of Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
‘Yunus should step down himself’
Commenting further, Tun Faisal said Yunus could also propose to resign as Sabah Bersatu secretary.
“Because he is also part of the failure in planning for the Sabah state election.
“As a member of the Bersatu supreme leadership council, he should be aware of the executive powers of the party president to negotiate, and that the outcome of discussions with the PAS president is in the form of negotiations and proposals,” said Tun Faisal.

Yunus, who is also Libaran Bersatu chief, had described Hamzah as a leader with sufficient experience to shoulder the responsibility of leading Bersatu, rebuilding internal party trust, and restoring strategic relations within PN in a more structured, disciplined, and stability-oriented manner.
“I am also of the opinion that Muhyiddin should focus on the legal matters he is facing, including the Jana Wibawa-related case scheduled for March.
“This is so that party leadership affairs and coalition management are not continually burdened by prolonged controversy and polemics,” he claimed.
Last week, leaked letters between Muhyiddin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had reignited calls for the Pagoh MP to resign as Bersatu president.

This came after the PAS president contradicted Muhyiddin’s statement that a “consensus” had been reached to resolve issues surrounding the appointment of a new PN chairperson, including abolishing the position and creating a new presidential council.
Hadi and other PAS leaders were also absent from a “pre-council” meeting called by Muhyiddin at his home, attended by PN components Gerakan and MIPP. - Mkini
