Anwar must explain Epstein-linked email

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should give a proper explanation about the email sent to him in 2012 by an aide of Jeffrey Epstein regarding a meeting with a top executive of the American bank JP Morgan.

There was a realisation in American circles that Anwar was a good ally of the US. Whether Epstein’s aide believed that Anwar had the potential to become the prime minister of Malaysia was not known.

The letter was written in 2012 at a time when Anwar’s political fortunes were sinking in the country. It was only after the electoral gains in the 2013 general election that the coalition led by Anwar became a serious contender for the post of prime minister.

For the uninformed, Epstein was infamous for trafficking and supplying underaged girls to prominent personalities. Epstein’s files refer to over six million documents that contained the names of prominent personalities who sought sexual favours from Epstein.

These files are being released in the US under the Epstein Transparency Act.

Epstein died in prison; some suspect he was murdered.

Anwar’s name is mentioned in relation to giving favoured treatment to JP Morgan to set foot in Malaysia. The email mentioned whether Anwar was available to meet the bank’s top executive in the US or Europe.

Epstein apparently coaxed the email sender into dangling the carrot of meeting Woody Allen in Paris to Anwar. Unfortunately, in 2012, Anwar was not in a position to claim that he could become the prime minister of Malaysia one day.

It was only after the 2013 general election that Anwar became a serious contender to become the prime minister of the country. The Malaysian public needs to know whether Anwar had the opportunity to meet Epstein in the US or Europe.

Although the contents of the email sent in 2012 were political in nature, it was clear that the US was already in the process of cultivating a relationship with Anwar as a potential supporter of Western interests.

The information contained in the Epstein files is a serious matter, and what is more, Anwar’s name is mentioned.

Chances are that it was political in nature. Even if this was so, Anwar cannot brush it off or laugh it off as something unimportant.

Anwar definitely owes an explanation to the public, not just on why his name is mentioned in the files, but also whether Putrajaya ceded 5,207 hectares of territory on the Sabah-Kalimantan border to Indonesia in return for three villages.

Former DAP stalwart and Penang deputy chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council chairman.
