KUALA LUMPUR: A Universiti Malaya (UM) student reported missing since last Tuesday has been found safe after voluntarily presenting herself at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) to seek psychiatric treatment from Wednesday.
The disappearance had earlier raised concern among friends, family members and the university community.
Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said checks with the hospital confirmed that the student had gone to HKL on her own.
He said her condition is stable and she is currently warded for mental health observation.
"She is believed to have been experiencing emotional distress following the death of a family member (her mother)," he said in a brief statement tonight.
The Universiti Malaya Student Union (KMUM) also confirmed in an Instagram post that the student, Nawal Shahirah Mohd Jamil, has been found and is safe.
However, the post said she has requested privacy at this time.
Earlier, it was reported that police were searching for Nawal after she was reported missing on Tuesday.
Shamsudin had previously said the 23-year-old had yet to return home, adding that police received a report on her disappearance at 10.34pm on Jan 28. - NST
