KUALA LUMPUR: Friends and family of veteran writer and journalist Adibah Amin will host a tribute night on April 12 to celebrate her literary legacy and raise funds for her care.
Now aged 90, Adibah is facing increasing health challenges and requires sustained financial support.
She is widely regarded as one of Malaysia's most cherished cultural figures.
Over several decades, she shaped Malaysian journalism and literature as an editor with the New Straits Times, The Star and Berita Harian, where she was the first female editor.
She is also known as a columnist, translator, educator and novelist.
A daughter of the late Tan Sri Hajah Zainun Bt. Munshi Sulaiman, better known as Ibu Zain, Adibah previously taught at Tunku Kurshiah College, Malaysia's first fully residential all-girls' school.
In 2024, she was named National Journalist Laureate, a distinction personally conferred by the prime minister.
The event, to be held at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, will feature the launch of 'As I Was Passing: Legacy Edition', a special release presented with her personal autograph.
Organisers said proceeds from the dinner and book donations will go towards her care as well as the creation of literary prizes in her name.
The programme will include readings, reflections, video presentations and tributes from writers and thespians, accompanied by live music.
Aishah Ali, a journalist and former New Straits Times editor for Women, Features and the Sunday Mail, described Adibah's work as the spark that ignited her own calling in journalism.
"In the early 70s when our country was navigating the delicate process of rebuilding and healing from racial tensions, her columns warmed hearts by dismantling prejudices and celebrating what it meant to be Malaysians," she said. - NST
