GEORGETOWN: Penang Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development exco Fahmi Zainol, who is facing charges of injuring his wife, will continue to perform his official duties as usual for the time being.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow dismissed speculation that the state government had come under pressure from any party to ask the Pantai Jerejak assemblyman to take leave or resign from his portfolio.

"Yes, he will carry out his duties as normal. We were only informed of the charges this afternoon. The court will decide on the matter, and we cannot act ahead of the judiciary. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty," Chow said when met by reporters after officiating the Prangin Mall Ramadan Bazaar today.

Chow added that while the question of whether Fahmi should step down or take leave could be discussed, any decision would be addressed in an upcoming exco meeting.

"Yes, that can be discussed in next week's exco meeting," he said.

Earlier, media reported that Fahmi pleaded not guilty when he was brought before the Balik Pulau magistrate's court today to face the charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife on Sunday.

The court granted bail of RM2,000 with one surety and set the next mention of the case for April 28. - NST
