ALOR GAJAH: A kindergarten teacher had a close call with a king cobra while preparing to iron clothes at her home in Kampung Pulau, Durian Tunggal, at 5.30am today.
Kamisah Abu, 55, said she only noticed the three-metre-long reptile after spotting something coiled beneath the ironing board.
She said she, her husband and their daughter had just finished having suhoor (pre-dawn meal) but did not realise the snake was there as it remained still and made no sound.
"God wanted to test our family during this month of Ramadan. My foot was already very close — if I had stepped on its tail, only God knows what might have happened.
"Usually I don't look down, but this morning I felt compelled to do so and immediately saw the snake. I trembled in fear and screamed for my husband," she said.
She said her husband later identified it as a king cobra before contacting the Village Development and Security Committee chairman and the Alor Gajah Civil Defence Force (CDF).
Kamisah said it was the first time in 15 years that a venomous snake had entered their home, and she suspected it came from nearby bushes.
"Yesterday evening I was cleaning outside the house and did not see anything. The snake may have entered during the night," she said.
She said the family were relieved after the reptile was captured by CDF personnel. - NST
