NILAI: An elderly man facing five charges related to improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Nilai last December has died.
District police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said the accused, 63-year-old Yeoh Hock Sun, was pronounced dead at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) at 8.18pm tonight.
He said that the information was relayed to the Nilai police headquarters at 8.30pm by escort officers from Kajang Prison, Selangor.
"The cause of death was 'Refractory Shock', a condition in which the patient fails to respond despite receiving optimal standard treatment," he said in a statement this evening.
Earlier reports stated that the man's case mention on Feb 12 had to be postponed after he was reported to be in critical condition at the hospital.
On Jan 9, the charges against him were read out at Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar (HTJ) as he was receiving treatment for injuries sustained in an explosion at the Desa Palma apartment complex.
Yeoh had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
On Dec 22, residents in Desa Palma were alarmed by a loud explosion, believed to have occurred while the suspect was handling the device before fleeing the scene.
He was later found in a weakened state with burn injuries on his face, hands, and legs in a forested area near Batang Benar on Dec 27.
He was said to have been hiding in the forest since the incident until discovered by members of the public collecting forest produce.
The suspect's arrest also led to the recovery of a motorcycle and several other improvised explosive devices. - NST
