PAS Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan is expected to replace Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin as the Opposition leader following Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) internal discussions.
The proposal, raised during the coalition’s supreme council meeting on Feb 22, received support from Bersatu and PN Youth.
While PAS has yet to formally notify the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, the move signals PAS’ intent to assume the role.
Takiyuddin also received backing from Bersatu. He currently serves as the coalition’s chief whip.
“In the PN supreme council meeting on 22 February, the matter of the opposition leader was raised by Bersatu. The PN Youth chief proposed that PN chief whip Takiyuddin be elevated as Opposition Leader. The Bersatu representative agreed.
“It was supposed to be announced together with the announcement of the PN chairman, but it was not announced by PAS,” The Vibes reported a source as saying.
Two days ago, a report by another portal said the opposition will not seek to change Hamzah’s position as opposition leader, citing time constraints as the current Dewan Rakyat sitting draws to a close.
Moreover, Takiyuddin said the matter had been discussed following engagements with the Speaker, but no formal notification had been submitted regarding any leadership change.
“As of now, Hamzah remains the opposition leader. There has been no notification from the opposition bloc on any change to his position,” he said at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 26). — Focus Malaysia
