Can Tengku Zafrul plug PKR’s bursting bubble?

THE appointment of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz as senior  political adviser to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (effective March 4, 2026) marks a calculated shift in PKR’s survival strategy.

As the party grapples with internal fractures and a “bursting bubble” of supporter expectations, Tengku Zafrul is increasingly being positioned not just as a government advisor but as the “poster boy” for a more pragmatic, economy-first PKR.

While the PKR leadership views Tengku Zafrul as a strategic asset, the digital “court of public opinion” tells a different story. Since his appointment as senior political adviser, Tengku Zafrul has faced a persistent and coordinated wave of online backlash.

On X, some users are calling Tengku Zafrul a “pisang goreng” seller.

While it is amusing, the post may have an even deeper meaning, with “goreng” used mostly to suggest that someone is trying to shove facts under the carpet.

Public backlash intensified following Tengku Zafrul’s recent social media post comparing domestic oil prices to the global volatility caused by the conflict in Iran.

Users are demanding to know how the government plans to mitigate the inevitable surge in the cost of goods if petrol prices are forced upward.

A user was very sharp in their comment:

Nevertheless, the point remains: Can Tengku Zafrul be the poster boy who revives hope among PKR voters?

X user Nama_Aku_Rul probably gave a hint on the poster boy claims:

Rumours circulating among pro-Rafizi Ramli circles suggest that Tengku Zafrul will contest the Ampang Parliamentary seat in the next general election.

The seat is held by PKR’s Dr Rodziah Ismail, who reclaimed it from Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin – the former PKR stalwart who defected during the 2020 “Sheraton Move” to join the Muhyiddin Yassin-led administration.

Today, Rodziah is identified with the influential Rafizi-aligned bloc of backbenchers.

These veteran “Reformasi” leaders find themselves in an escalating internal tug-of-war with Anwar, challenging him over the government’s ideological direction, the integrity of the anti-corruption drive, and the shifting power dynamics within PKR’s leadership.

In the meantime, Tengku Zafrul – whom critics often dismiss as a “spoon-fed” technocrat with no history in the Reformasi struggle – is now seen as the ultimate beneficiary of PKR’s power, enjoying both the limelight and the significant perks of a government he did nothing to build.

What has PKR given to Tengku Zafrul so far:

Political bureau appointment
PKR has appointed Tengku Zafrul an ex officio member of its Political Bureau. This places him directly in the party’s inner sanctum for strategic decision-making.

Economic stewardship as political capital
Leaders like Datuk Fahmi Fadzil have emphasised Tengku Zafrul’s ability to communicate complex economic successes – like the strengthening ringgit and investment inflows – as a core part of PKR’s value proposition to the “unconvinced” middle class.

A “technocratic” buffer
PKR Secretary-General Fuziah Salleh confirmed his membership, signalling the party’s intent to use his technocratic image to balance the more ideological (and often contentious) wings of the party, such as the factions surrounding Rafizi.

With Tengku Zafrul, PKR and Anwar intends to win big. The “Zafrul Factor” is central to Anwar’s three strategic goals for 2026:

  1. Winning the urban/corporate vote: By moving Tengku Zafrul into a central role, PKR aims to reassure the business community and urban professionals who may be wary of populist rhetoric.
  2. Bridging the “Green Wave” gap: Zafrul’s background in Umno provides a bridge to Malay voters in semi-urban seats where PKR has recently struggled, particularly in the northern states.
  3. Stability over Reformasi: The strategy suggests a pivot from the “Reformasi” firebrand roots towards a “competency and stability” narrative, aimed at retaining power in what is expected to be a highly volatile 16th General Election.

But, to achieve success, Tengku Zafrul will have to defeat the Rafizi group, not in the party where he was catapulted to leadership positions but on the ground, where he seems to have limited reach.
