PETALING JAYA:
James Chai, a former aide to ex-economy minister Rafizi Ramli, says he has appointed two lawyers who will contact investigating officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in light of an investigation involving him.

Chai, who is based in the UK, said his lawyers would liaise with the commission to arrange a session for MACC to record his statement.

He said he became aware that MACC wanted him to assist in an investigation only after a public notice to trace individuals was widely circulated on Wednesday.

He said the first messages he received claiming to be from MACC officers were sent via WhatsApp late last night from numbers using usernames such as ‘~Radio’ and ‘~علي محمد ‘.

He said in a media statement that his lawyers would be in touch with MACC to arrange for the session “to ensure that the investigation is conducted professionally and impartially”. He reiterated that he was ready to provide full cooperation to MACC “in a lawful and professional manner”.

Chai said he had provided his lawyers with the email address of investigating officer Hafidz Halim, as well as the phone numbers of other officers named by the commission.

Earlier today, MACC called on Chai to immediately contact its investigating officers and return to Malaysia to assist in an ongoing investigation. The commission said he had yet to respond to several attempts by officers to reach him or present himself at its headquarters in Putrajaya.

On Wednesday, MACC issued a public search notice for Chai, who previously served as a special functions officer to Rafizi when he was the economy minister. The notice did not specify the reason he was being sought. However, it came after a recent investigation into alleged misconduct linked to a RM1.1 billion government deal with chipmaker Arm Holdings signed in March last year. - FMT
