Petronas denies involvement in Philippines' plan to buy Malaysian oil

Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) has denied any involvement in a proposed fuel supply to the Philippines, following reports of a regional government’s plan in that country to obtain supplies from Malaysia.

In a statement today, Petronas stressed that it was unaware of and uninvolved in any related arrangements, nor has it entered into any agreements or commitments regarding the proposal.

"Petronas wishes to clarify that it is not aware of, nor involved in, any such arrangement, and has not entered into any related agreement or commitment," the national oil and gas company said.

It emphasised its focus on ensuring a stable and continuous fuel supply for Malaysia.

"This remains its utmost priority, supported by established supply networks and close coordination with the government," it added.

The provincial government of Davao del Norte in Mindanao was reported on March 25 as intending to purchase up to 44 million litres of crude oil and petrol from Malaysia to address rising fuel prices following the conflict in West Asia.

The Philippine News Agency quoted the province’s governor, Edwin Jubahib, as saying that while the purchase cost has not been finalised, he was confident the Malaysian government would provide the supply.

“I connected with the Johol district in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, and shared our problem. Since they have a huge reserve of crude oil and gasoline (petrol), they responded positively and said we can buy some of it,” Jubahib said.

He reportedly said the supply would be obtained from Malaysia’s national petroleum company.

“The liaison of the ruler of Johol is in the provincial capitol right now, and we will meet today (March 25) to discuss the cost and delivery,” he added. - Mkini
