After protest, MACC deploys tactical squad to deter Azam hecklers at event

The MACC is reported to have deployed its special tactical squad and heightened security at an event featuring its chief commissioner Azam Baki today.

The elite officers were stationed at every entrance of the Bangi Avenue Convention Centre, where Azam (above) gave a convocation speech to civil servants who are now certified integrity officers (CeIO) after attending programmes organised by the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Academy last year.

Besides the tactical squad, several media outlets reported that police and auxiliary police were also stationed at the venue.

Sinar Harian reported that the heightened security was in response to an incident last week, where three protesters heckled Azam while he was giving a speech at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Besides more security personnel, it was reported that the media also had to register and get special passes before they were allowed into the event hall where the graduation took place.

The event, which began at 8.30am, went smoothly with 486 officers from the public and private sectors, including government-linked companies, all dressed in graduation robes, receiving certificates for completing the programme last year.

In his speech, Azam said these officers can help reinforce internal controls and nurture integrity within their respective organisations.

“The CeIO programme has been designed comprehensively to ensure participants not only understand legal and compliance issues, but are also able to carry out anti‑corruption prevention duties, manage integrity matters, and provide effective governance advice,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

He added that the academy has developed a new 2026 Prime Minister’s Directive for the CeIO programme to keep it aligned with the national agenda.

In the spotlight

On April 7, three protesters were arrested after waving “Tangkap Azam Baki” (Arrest Azam Baki) placards while Azam delivered his keynote speech at the Wacana Ilmiah Perdana event.

The trio - Mandiri coordinators Hamdin Nordin and Fakrurrazzi Khairur Rijal, and Liga Mahasiswa Malaysia activist Ahsanul Akmal Sulam - were released on April 9, and are being investigated for obstructing public servants, trespassing, provocation, and public nuisance.

Azam has been in the spotlight over his shareholdings, which allegedly exceeded limits imposed on public officials.

At the same time, the MACC and Azam have been linked to a “corporate mafia” scandal, with anti-graft officers allegedly colluding with businesspersons to execute corporate takeovers.

The commission, however, has repeatedly denied its involvement in the alleged “corporate mafia”, claiming the accusations are part of a smear campaign to undermine its reputation.

The government, which is probing both allegations, has not given an update on its investigations. - Mkini
