Jail time up to three years for using other people’s MyKad for fuel purchase

THE REGISTRATION Department (JPN) has yet again warned the public against using another person’s MyKad—including those belonging to family members—to purchase subsidised fuel, stressing that such actions are strictly prohibited.

Those found guilty under the regulation may face a maximum fine of RM20,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

According to JPN, the MyKad is an official identification document that must not be held or represented by anyone other than its lawful owner.

JPN Director-General, Badrul Hisham Alias was quoted in a statement by the New Straits Times, stating that the prohibition is in line with Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which states that the use or possession of another person’s identity card is an offence and may result in legal action.

Badrul also stressed that all transactions involving the purchase of fuel must be carried out personally by the cardholder, as lending or handing over one’s MyKad to others may lead to serious consequences.

His statement follows several cases where drivers were found in possession of other individuals’ MyKad while purchasing subsidised fuel.

The statement follows a recent media report quoting Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat on the arrest of a man suspected of using four identity cards to purchase over 100 litres of RON95 petrol.

The suspect was detained while filling up at a petrol station in Tumpat, Kelantan. — Focus Malaysia
