WAR IS often wrapped in the language of honour, security, or national destiny. But beneath the rhetoric, its burdens fall unevenly, and rarely on those who call for it.
Again and again throughout history, it is the poor who pay the highest price, while the wealthy, who are often closest to the levers of power, remain insulated from its worst consequences.
And that is why Mahathir calls the current global conflict a “Silly War” which he pens on his twitter account.
According to him, the war between Russia and Ukraine is a silly war because the latter cannot defeat the former.
He conjectured that Ukraine’s hope is for the NATO nations to join in the war against Russia. But the NATO nations do not want to go to war.
“Their hope is that the war would impoverish Russia, expose its military capacity. Then NATO would be the strongest military force in Europe and the world,” said Mahathir.
He added that in the meantime, thousands will die and a big number will be wounded. Millions are further displaced. The man ended his post by drawing parallels between the war in Ukraine and the current conflict in Iran.
The sombre tone of the post is reflected upon the comments by the netizens who followed it too.
“All wars are silly Tun, including the wars of Arab conquest and colonization of the middle east and northern Africa in the 7th century,” said netizen @AhmadAzhar while @princemalaya commented that it is already too late.

“The US and Israel should just retreat and pay reparations to Iran,” added @DinoQuantum60.
But Mahathir’s words of wisdom failed to impress some of the online folks, take for example, @Edsayshello7 who claimed he attempted to cut off Singapore’s water supply.

While the war in Ukraine may be a Silly War as said by Mahathir, it is also vital to point out that Russia is facing an existential problem if the former were to join NATO.
In other words, the military block is another step closer to the Russian motherland. Yet the point remains, that all war is a Silly War, at least for the poor who have to send their children off to fight it. — Focus Malaysia
