KUALA LUMPUR: A video showing a rubbish truck struggling to navigate a flat housing area believed to be in the capital has sparked online frustration, with many Malaysians blaming excessive car dependency and persistent double-parking habits.
The clip, shared on X, showed vehicles parked tightly and haphazardly along the road, leaving barely enough space for the truck to pass.
The original poster, user @shahrimtamrin, described the situation as "first world pains", adding that parking had become a free-for-all.
The user also said Malaysia had become so car-centric that even a rubbish truck could no longer move easily through a residential area.
"If there is a fire incident, a sudden medical emergency or a disaster, how will a fire engine or ambulance get through?" he wrote.
For many commenters, the scene was less shocking than familiar, as they vented frustration over the growing number of vehicles and the lack of space to accommodate them, particularly in high-density neighbourhoods.
One commenter, @sanshaf, claimed that nearly 70,000 new cars were sold each month last year and questioned how the country could continue accommodating such growth.
"I have no idea how we accommodate 70,000 new cars on the road and in parking spaces every month," the user wrote.
Another user, @RandomHistoryG4, said Malaysia should adopt a rule similar to Japan's, where proof of parking is required before a person is allowed to purchase a car.
"Malaysia should have a law like Japan's, where you need verified proof of parking before buying a car," the user said.
Meanwhile, @kkulen said the situation was not isolated, arguing that double-parking and roadside obstruction have become normalised in many areas.
"This is bad. This happens everywhere. How can people just double park, and why aren't the authorities doing anything?" the user said.
The post has become a stark snapshot of life in Kuala Lumpur's high-density residential areas, reigniting public debate over car dependency, poor parking discipline and daily congestion issues. - NST
