KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno Supreme Council member wants the Auditor General to investigate the status of the nasi lemak vending machine project spearheaded by Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli when he was Economy Minister.
Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said the probe is needed to see if the project is effective, not wasteful and free from inflated machine prices.
"I urge the AG to investigate the status of this project. Is it still effective, not wasteful, and free of any mark-up in the purchase of the vending machines?
"Don't let it end up like the MyKiosk project under the Housing and Local Government Ministry. One kiosk costs RM25,000 - expensive and wasteful, with many kiosks sitting empty," he said in a statement on Facebook.
The vending machine project, under the People's Income Initiative's Food Entrepreneur Initiative module (IPR-Insan), which sells nasi lemak and other food items, was introduced on Feb 26, 2023.
The initiative was launched by the Economy ministry to help the B40 group generate additional income, with the first 100 machines beginning operations in June 2023.
Yesterday, PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan criticised the RM750 million project led by Rafizi at the PKR Johor Convention.
Puad said the investigation must be carried out promptly as the project involved a matter of public interest, particularly given the large sum involved.
"Ramanan is a minister. His criticism of Rafizi's project was made in front of the prime minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim).
"No wonder he accused Rafizi of being the most failed minister. Ramanan considers the project a failure. That is why he dared to openly advise the prime minister to choose a truly qualified Economy minister next time," he said. - NST
