PETALING JAYA: A single father is refusing to accept any more donations from the public after he was seen a viral video that appeared to show him having difficulty finding money to pay a mechanic after his motorcycle broke down in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Sinar Harian, the man known as Dicky Yau was touched by the concern showed by social media users who had offered to extend financial help to him after seeing the situation he was in.
"I would like to thank everyone who sent private messages to offer help. However, I cannot accept any donations from anyone.
"If there is any account asking for donations using my name, it is fake. Thanks everyone for your concern," he said in a TikTok post on Saturday (April 18).
Yau said his motorcycle had already been repaired by the owner of the TikTok account @minyakhitamjalanan.
He said any donations received would be given to the mechanics featured in the TikTok account, who are known for their efforts to help motorcyclists stranded due to vehicle breakdowns, even in the dead of the night.
"Next week, I will look for that brother (mechanic). I will give these TikTok live gifts to that brother so he can help others," said Yau.
Posts on the "minyakhitamjalanan" account on TikTok and "Minyak hitam jalanan original" on Facebook described how he, the mechanic, received a call from Yau at around 12.30am asking for help to repair a motorcycle that had broken down.
The mechanic said the total cost of repair, including the chain, sprocket, as well as labour charges, came to RM145.
"I just got to where he was stranded and chatted with him while he borrowed money from his friend... then I finished the repair.
"He wanted to pay me. I looked at his cellphone but he had just enough for himself.
"I thought he really needed it (the money), so I used the infaq (charity) money for him. When he hugged me, I was really touched.
"Every human being has their own story to tell. I hope this brother remains strong," he said.
Previously, the viral video sparked various reactions from netizens, receiving 6.9 million views with over 394,000 likes and 30,600 comments.
