SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDILADHA 2026

Ronnie Liu now accused of insulting Selangor ruler with ‘Rukun Negara’ T-shirt; a possible 3R trigger?

JUDGING by the brickbats hurled at him by the rightist fraternity on grounds of humiliating and disrespecting Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, one wouldn’t be surprised if someone could initiate a police report against DAP stalwart Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew for his innovative t-shirt design.

Inspired by the reprimand “to absorb the true meaning of Rukun Negara” for his incessant defence of pig farming which runs afoul of the Selangor ruler’s wishes, the former state EXCO member has apparently rolled out two versions of his “special Rukun Negara limited edition” T-shirt yesterday (May 26).

“How much would you pay for one T-shirt? I’m thinking of launching the T-shirt online,” penned the 68-year-old Liu who in recent times is active on Facebook.

“So that we can wear our five principles in national life in a cool way [sic]. Thank you, Tuanku, for the idea. Someone told me that Tuanku is the right personality to launch the Rukun Negara T-shirt.”

Editor’s Note: Recall that Sultan Sharafuddin had about a week ago decreed that Liu who was a former state EXCO along with Seri Kembangan state assemblywoman Wong Siew Ki pay weekly visit to Dataran Selangor so that the duo can better cherish the five National Principles.

This led to DAP loyalist Tony Pua making a public remark along the line that “constitutional monarch bears limited power” which triggered intense furore among rightists/nationalists to which 120 police reports have reportedly been lodged against the three-term lawmaker to-date.

What is certain is Liu’s innovative idea ‘to popularise’ Rukun Negara among Malaysians at large” did not go down well with detractors who accused him of mocking, insulting and poking fun of the Selangor ruler.

With the rightist fraternity literally ‘all triggered’ with Liu’s T-shirt, it could just be a matter of time before someone linked such innovative idea to a 3R (race, religion, royalty) element.

In fact, calls for his citizenship to be revoked, balik Tongsan (literally “go back to China”) to questioning why Liu is kebal (literally “invulnerable”) in the eyes of the authorities have started to trickle in.

Beyond that, the Madani government was also faulted for giving too much face to Liu to “menganjing (mock/insult) the Rukun Negara to this extent”.

At the end of the day, one commenter called on the Selangor ruler “to upgrade” the frequency of Liu’s visit to Dataran Selangor from “once a week to daily” given “his degree of foolishness has risen multi-folds”.

“If he continues to behave in that manner, just banish him (from Selangor) as there’s nothing to lose,” he added.
