Mitra Tamil empowerment programme: RM900k allocation benefits 8,690 SPM, STPM students

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 8,690 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) candidates nationwide have benefited from the 2026 Tamil Language Excellence Empowerment Programme, involving an allocation of RM901,680.

The Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra), under the Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma), said the programme was implemented in collaboration with the Education Ministry (MOE) to improve academic performance and Tamil language proficiency.

The initiative was part of the government's efforts to support students from the Indian community through focused academic preparation, while boosting their motivation, self-confidence and examination readiness, it said in a statement today.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said 7,897 SPM candidates and 793 STPM candidates who sat for the Tamil Language paper nationwide had benefited from the programme.

"We want to ensure every student has the opportunity to achieve excellence, regardless of their background. Through Mitra, we are not merely providing educational assistance, but implementing academic interventions that can directly impact student achievement.

"Tamil language is not merely a subject to be mastered for examinations, but a treasure trove of language, culture and identity that must be preserved by future generations," he said.

Ramanan earlier officiated the programme at the Omnia Auditorium, Menara BAC, Petaling Jaya, which was attended by nearly 300 SPM candidates and 50 educators from Selangor.

Mitra said it would continue to expand educational initiatives under Kalvi Madani, including through strategic collaborations with MOE, state education departments and relevant institutions, to extend access to targeted academic development programmes for more students from the Indian community. - NST
