KUCHING:
The ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will field a mix of new faces and capable and experienced leaders for the upcoming state election, said premier Abang Johari Openg.

The GPS chairman said the coalition’s final list of candidates will be determined during a special meeting before it is officially announced.

He also noted that some elected representatives have chosen to step down on their own accord.

“What I can share here is that it will be a combination of the experienced and the young.

“Certainly, there will be new faces, some incumbents are not being dropped, but are instead choosing to step aside,” he said at a press conference where he announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly on Oct 26.

The dissolution will pave the way for the 13th state election to be held within 60 days.

GPS comprises four component parties – Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and the Progressive Democratic Party.

In the last state election held on Dec 18, 2021, it won 76 of the 82 seats up for grabs. - FMT
