3 OF THE 19 REMANDED FOR ATTACKING SEAFIELD TEMPLE ARE STAFF OF DEVELOPER – BUT PREMATURE TO BLAME ONE CITY UNTIL THE FULL STORY IS REVEALED

At least three One City Development Bhd employees were among the 19 remanded over the first night of violent clashes at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya on Monday.
One City Development Bhd owns the land on which the Seafield temple sits. Attempts to relocate the temple led to clashes and rioting in the early hours of Monday.
The 19 were remanded at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.
Two of the employees are being represented by lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdullah, and another by lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali.
Haniff said his clients were remanded for two days, while Rafique said his client was remanded for four.
“The police were asking for a seven-day remand period but the magistrate granted a two-day remand for my client, which ends on midnight Wednesday, Thursday morning,” Haniff said to reporters outside the courtroom today.
Meanwhile, the other 16, including three who are currently hospitalised, were remanded for five days.
Haniff said they are being investigated under Sections 148, 427, 435 and 447 of the Penal Code.
Section 148 concerns the possession of weapons or missile at a riot, while Section 427 deals with committing mischief and thereby causing damage to the amount of RM25,000 or more.
Section 435 is on mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage to the amount of RM25,000 or more, and Section 447 is on criminal trespass.
The clash on Monday led to supporters to gather near the temple again in the early hours of Tuesday.
However, there was renewed violence when some within the group harassed passersby and put a Fire and Rescue Department personnel in the intensive care unit.
Haniff stressed that One City has been cooperative with the police from the very beginning.
