After death of infant, DPM wants heavier punishments for child rapists

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has called for heavier punishments for those who perpetrate sexual offences against children.
Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family, and Community Development Minister, was responding to a recent incident in Bangi, where a nine-month-old baby died after being allegedly raped, sodomised and abused by the husband of her caretaker.
"I can't comprehend why somebody would do that to a baby.
"The suspect was high on drugs, but does that mean that our humanity has gone?
"Whatever it is, we want justice for the deceased, and if possible, a heavier punishment," Wan Azizah told reporters after the closing ceremony of 2018 Pergerakan Puteri Islam Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Kajang police, the victim died after being admitted for two days at the Serdang Hospital. She was found with vaginal and anal tears.
A postmortem by the hospital's pathology department identified the cause of death as a blunt impact to the head.
Police arrested the caretaker and her husband, 36 on Friday. The suspect tested positive for methamphetamine.
Wan Azizah also commented on a separate incident at a welfare home in Temerloh, where a 10-year-old girl lodged a police report over her claim that she and her friends had been sexually abused by a male staff member.
The minister said that the 27 children from the home have been returned to their relatives, and two put under protection by the centre.
"There could be social disturbance and all of them have been rescued by the Welfare Department.
"They were sent to the hospital for medical check-ups," she said. - Mkini
