All goods through customs must be fully checked - Dr M

The government wants all goods that go through customs to be fully checked, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Speaking to reporters after chairing the Cabinet Special Committee on Anti-Corruption meeting today, he said the checks must not be done only at random.

"This government has only been (for) six months, but we already have five meetings on anti-corruption. This shows the government's seriousness looking at corruption, and we have heard seven papers on all the problems and actions to be taken by agencies or certain ministries so that we can minimise corrupt incidences.

"There are many more actions that need to be taken, like to make sure that all items that are being brought in through customs must be fully checked and not only at random," he said.

During the conference, Mahathir said the government also took steps to enhance integrity in all government-linked companies (GLCs) by ordering them to set up their own integrity and governance unit (GIU).

The order, which was issued on Oct 5, also affects all companies owned by ministries and government agencies, including those under state governments.
