The alleged tampering of the National Audit Department's report on 1MDB is a very serious issue and "frustrating" if true, Umno MP Khairy Jamaluddin said today.
The former Umno Youth chief said such an incident should not have happened as the auditor-general (Madinah Mohamad) should be free from any interference in making the report.
However, Khairy added that the matter should be left to the authorities who have begun their investigation.
"Yesterday, Najib (former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak) had given his explanation about Jho Low's presence in the 1MDB board meeting.
"However, if this is true, why is there a contradictory statement from the auditor-general saying that there was an order to make amendments to the report.
"So, we wait maybe for an explanation from the auditor-general on this matter and (the outcome of the) investigation which has begun today, with the MACC calling several people to record their statements.
"(But) if such an order to delete about Jho Low's presence in 1MDB board meeting had indeed happened, it is something serious and frustrating. So, we wait for the outcome of the investigation," he told reporters when met at the Parliament lobby.
The former youth and sports minister said the cabinet had never been informed about Jho Low's attendance in the 1MDB meeting.
"The auditor-general's report shouldn't be tampered with because it must be independent and free.
"There shouldn't be an order for amendment. Even when I was a minister, my ministry had been subjected to probe and reprimanded many times.
"But we accepted as this is the normal practice in the government, where audits must be conducted and weaknesses must be rectified," Khairy added. - Mkini
