The Penang Islamic Religious Council, State Education Department and police are investigating claims that bibles are being distributed to students in front of a secondary school in Bukit Mertajam.
The matter has gone viral on social media.
Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said the state government would not tolerate any attempts to cause a disturbance in society and was leaving it to the authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.
"I wish to reiterate that Islam is the official religion of the state of Penang as enshrined in the state constitution. Any attempt to upset racial and religious harmony in a multiracial and multi-religious society will not be tolerated,” he said in a statement here today.
Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who is in charge of Islamic affairs, said that the claims were true.
Proselytisation of Muslims is banned by law in the country.
