CCTV CAMERAS, PASSENGER SEATBELTS NOW COMPULSORY FOR NEW EXPRESS & TOUR BUSES – ANTHONY LOKE

KAJANG: All new express and tour buses in the country will be equipped with CCTV cameras, and passengers will be required to wear seatbelts beginning next year.
The announcement was made by Transport Minister Anthony Loke at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) here, today.
He also revealed that all buses must henceforth be equipped with brake retarder systems as well as speed limiter gadgets, Bernama reported.
Loke was speaking during a press conference following the handover ceremony of the Recommendation Review Panel (RRP) report which examined the Genting Highlands bus accident in Aug 2013 which killed 37 people – one of the deadliest road traffic mishaps in Malaysian history.
Loke said the new measures are among the 51 recommendations made in the RRP.
“Fifty-four per cent of suggestions in the report have already been implemented; 38 per cent have been partially implemented; while eight per cent have yet to be implemented,” he told Bernama.
One of the biggest proposals in the report is the establishment of the Malaysian Transportation Safety Board, which will address traffic accidents, in particular, ones involving express buses.
“Enforcement on compliance on the compulsory installation (of CCTV cameras and seatbelts) on all new buses will commence in 2020; while the mandatory (wearing of safety belts for all passengers) will begin next year,” Loke added.
