Don’t victimise MCA-founded universities, party leader tells Guan Eng

PETALING JAYA: MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker today slammed Lim Guan Eng for insisting that the two public universities founded by MCA need to cut ties with the political party in order to obtain more government funding.
Ti said Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) and University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) belonged to the Chinese community and served as a historical reminder that MCA had aided the Chinese when they were targeted post-May 13.
“TAR has helped so many poor Chinese at a time when Chinese were discriminated after the May 13 racial riots when the Chinese were targeted and singled out,” he said in a statement.
He added that TAR UC was the alma mater of many current leaders from different political parties, including DAP leaders such as Teresa Kok and Liew Chin Tong and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub, who is from Amanah.
He said, despite being the founder of the two universities, MCA did not exploit or politicise TAR UC, adding that the party had never “taken a single cent” from the university for political purposes.
He added the funds were accumulated for the development and operations of the college.
He called on Lim, who is the finance minister, to consider the poor students of TAR UC and UTAR.
“Please do not confuse or politicise MCA’s billions of assets, including our grassroots organisational buildings, that cannot be liquidated and that are being used for other communities or political work.
“Don’t persecute MCA and punish TAR UC and UTAR now that 95% of the Chinese have voted you into power.”
Recently, Lim called on the two universities to cut ties with the party prior to obtaining government funding, arguing that politics and education should be separated.

“Both UTAR and TAR UC must not be owned by MCA,” Lim had said in response to MCA president Wee Ka Siong’s question as to why the government had slashed funds, under Budget 2019, for the two institutions. -FMT
