Fugitive financier Jho Low, who was rolling in cash, partied with celebrities and dated supermodels, had led a life every man dreams of, according to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
However, the premier said Low, who is now on the run from the law, is somewhat like a “rat”.
Mahathir was commenting on the US Department of Justice (DOJ) indicting the Penang-born financier in absentia in relation to the 1MDB scandal.
“They (US) want to get Jho Low to stand trial, but don't know where he is. We (Malaysian authorities) don't know where he is as well.
“We also want him because there are several charges against him.
“If in the past, he led a life which every man dreams of, flying in planes and (sailing in the superyacht) Equanimity, but now (he is) hiding like a rat,” he told a press conference in Parliament this evening.
Low has been widely credited by Malaysian, Singaporean and US authorities as the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal and were investigating him for money laundering among other offences.
In August, Low and his father Hock Peng was charged in absentia for money laundering. Arrest warrants have been issued for both.
Low was formally a close associate of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. According to the latest DOJ court filings, Low had allegedly bribed the "wife of MO1". "MO1" is often used by the US authorities to refer to Najib.
