Ex-top cop to file counterclaim against Kit Siang’s defamation suit

KUALA LUMPUR: Former inspector-general of police (IGP) Hanif Omar will be filing a counterclaim against Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang over the DAP leader’s defamation suit on claims that he wanted to split Malaysia along racial lines.
Hanif’s lawyer, Shaharudin Ali, said this after attending the case mention before High Court registrar Siti Norhidayah Mohd Noor.
“The court ordered us to file our defence statement and counterclaim before Dec 5,” he said, adding that Lim’s lawyers had agreed to the date.
He said Lim was told to file his reply to Hanif’s defence and counterclaim before Dec 19.
When asked about Hanif’s counterclaim, Shaharudin said it would be on defamation.
“We will come to that after we go through all the related documents,” he added.
Shaharudin said the court had set Dec 20 for next mention. High Court judge Azimah Omar is scheduled to hear the case.
Lim filed the suit against Hanif last month, after the former top cop claimed in an interview that the DAP veteran had wanted to split Peninsular Malaysia into two, the west coast for the Chinese and the east coast for the Malays.
Hanif reportedly said this was why he had detained Lim under the Internal Security Act (ISA) after the 1969 general election. -FMT
Lim however dismissed Hanif’s claims, calling them “cock-and-bull stories about (Hanif’s) past police career” which were “replete with errors”.
In his suit, he said his reputation had been tarnished by Hanif’s allegations, which had also caused him to be condemned by the public.
He is seeking damages as well as an apology from Hanif. - FMT
