The Federal Court today saw the admission of its first female Indian judge - Justice P Nallini.
She is among the nine judges who have been newly elevated to the Federal Court and Court of Appeal.
Besides Justice Nallini (above), those who have been elevated from the Court of Appeal to the Federal Court are Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Justice Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, and Justice Idrus Harun, who was formerly solicitor-general at the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
Five judges have been elevated from the High Court to Court of Appeal: Justice Yew Jen Kie, Justice Lau Bee Lan, Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah, Justice Nor Bee Ariffin and Justice Has Zanah Mehat.
Justice Yew recently presided over and decided the Sabah’s chief minister case, which involved former chief minister Musa Aman versus Shafie Apdal and the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Juhar Mahiruddin.
Newly elevated Court of Appeal judge Lau is known for deciding the in the case of The Herald's challenge over the use of "Allah" in the Catholic weekly’s Bahasa Malaysia publication.
Justice Zabidin is best known for acquitting Anwar Ibrahim in the Sodomy II case at the High Court.
The newly appointed Federal Court judges took their oaths and pledged to uphold the constitution before Chief Justice Richard Malanjum.
Court of Appeal president Justice Ahmad Maarop also heard the new appellate court judges’ oaths and pledges of allegiance to the country and to uphold the constitution.
Seven of the nine judges who have been elevated to the Federal Court and Court of Appeal today are graduates of Universiti Malaya: Justice Tengku Maimun, Justice Abang Iskandar, Justice Idrus, Justice Lau, Justice Zabidin, Justice Nor Bee, and Justice Has Zanah.
Justice Nallini and Justice Yew are graduates of the University of London. -Mkini
