Flood: 1,081 people evacuated in Malacca


The number of flood victims in Malacca increased to 1,081 people from 302 families as at 8am today, from 868 people (239 families) last night.
Malacca Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) director Effendy Ali said the flood evacuees were being accommodated at eight relief centres, including the one at Balai Raya Seri Jeram in Alor Gajah district, which was the latest to be opened.
He said Alor Gajah district recorded the highest number of flood evacuees, totalling 951 people, with 229 of them at Sekolah Rendah Agama Jabatan Agama Islam Melaka (Jaim) Jelatang, Balai Raya Kampung Gadek (40 people) and SK Lesung Batu (205 people).
"Other evacuees in Alor Gajah comprise 102 people at Sekolah Tahfiz Panchor, Balai Raya Seri Jeram (four people), Balai Raya Kampung Beringin (71 people) and SK Belimbing Dalam (300 people),” he said in a statement issued here today.
Effendy, who is Malacca Disaster Management chief secretariat, said the remaining 130 evacuees were being accommodated at the relief centre at Balai Raya Kampung Tanah Merah, Krubong, in the Melaka Tengah district.
He said the flood occurred following four hours of heavy rain since 1.30 am yesterday.
