In e-hailing dispute, we can’t please all sides, says Putrajaya

PETALING JAYA: There are many interests when it comes to the e-hailing services, and it’s impossible to please all sides in finding a solution to the ongoing dispute that has riled up the traditional taxi industry, Putrajaya said.
Still, Deputy Transport Minister Kamarudin Jaffar said his ministry had always tried to find ways to ensure that the interests of all parties involved were taken into account.
This he said, included meetings with various taxi groups and associations.
He said it was not true that the ministry had ignored the interests of taxi drivers.
“We have put in a great deal of effort to take care of everyone’s interests, including that of taxi drivers,” he told FMT.
He was responding to a warning by cabbies to hold a demonstration on Dec 19 against Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook, accusing him of failing to address their grievances.
Gabungan Teksi Se-Malaysia, representing over 100 taxi associations nationwide, said Loke should resign for not doing his job.
The coalition also accused Loke of being arrogant and snubbing invitations to meet taxi drivers.
Kamarudin said the transport ministry wanted to make sure taxi drivers could work and earn a proper income.
He said cabbies were wrong in saying the ministry had not bothered to solve the issue.
The ministry was working hard to find a “win-win solution”, he added.
He said it was not right for the taxi coalition to accuse Loke of not wanting to meet cabbies.
“They wanted to see the minister but when they came here to the ministry recently, they did not check first whether he or myself were in.
“Both of us were not in the country. They can’t say it is our fault,” he said.
When contacted, a taxi company boss refuted what Kamarudin said.
Big Blue Taxi’s Shamsubahrin Ismail said he had received no response to a letter he had written on Nov 5 requesting a meeting with Loke.

Kamarudin also refuted claims that he did not want to sit down with the cabbies, adding that he was open to seeing anyone. - FMT
