An angry protest in the rain by some 50 members of right-wing Malay movement Perkasa turned to praise after news broke that the Pakatan Harapan government has decided against ratifying the United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
Led by Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, the gathering, which took place at the Ara Damansara mosque following the afternoon Friday prayers, was also in protest of the government's initial proposal to ratify the Convention, as well as the moratorium on the use of the Sedition Act 1948 pending its repeal.
The group was seen holding a sign that read "Selangor Perkasa objects to Icerd and the moratorium on the Sedition Act 1948", while crying out "reject Icerd”.
However, the Prime Minister's Office had, this afternoon, released a statement clarifying that the government will not be ratifying Icerd.
Upon being informed of this, Perkasa's protest cries soon turned to cheers, with Ibrahim crying out "Allahuakbar! Allahuakbar! Allahuakbar! (God is great)."
"Today, I am grateful to the Malaysian government as they have reached a resolution in regards to Icerd.
"This means the government has rejected signing the UN (convention) [...] at the right time," he said.
He added today's announcement by the government would appease the concerns of the community.
