PETALING JAYA: PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya has questioned the visit by party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to Julau, Sarawak, yesterday ahead of the PKR state election this Saturday.
Calling the visit “inappropriate and highly questionable”, the PKR lawyer noted several controversies associated with the Julau division, including reports of a sudden increase in membership to 13,000.
“Julau MP Larry Sng is also currently being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission,” she said, adding that Sng had openly declared his allegiance to the faction led by PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.
In a statement today, Latheefa said Wan Azizah, who is also deputy prime minister, had been widely seen and pictured with Sng during her visit.
“There is no conceivable reason why Wan Azizah’s visit must be carried out on the very eve of the PKR party election in Sarawak. Why could the deputy prime minister not visit after the party election?”
Given its 13,000 members, she said, the Julau division now had among the largest memberships in Sarawak PKR which could allow it to become kingmaker in the party election.
She claimed Wan Azizah’s visit involved use of her official position and government assets, noting that she had also announced a RM100,000 allocation for a road in Julau.
“This was announced in the presence of Sng, who is himself a candidate in the Julau division and for the party central committee.
“In these circumstances, it is imperative that the deputy prime minister explain the reason and circumstances of her visit to Julau on the eve of the Sarawak PKR election,” Latheefa said. “The public is entitled to know.” - FMT
