MIC has vowed to campaign for the BN candidate in the Rantau by-election in Negeri Sembilan where Indian Malaysians comprise 27 percent of the total voters.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, party information chief V Gunalan said Rantau would serve as a yardstick to measure the support of the community.
“It can be described as a 'checking ground' for MIC.
“Apart from this, it will also be a yardstick to measure Indian Malaysian support for Pakatan Harapan after the 14th general election,” he added.
Gunalan claimed that Malaysians, especially the Indian community, are peeved with the actions and statements of Harapan leaders.
“Their patience is wearing thin. I predict that voters will reject Harapan in Rantau,” he added.
Gunalan said MIC would discuss its preparations for the by-election during its next central working committee meeting.
“What is certain is that MIC will hit the ground to help the BN candidate,” he added.
On Nov 16, the Election Court in Seremban ordered a by-election after invalidatingformer Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan's victory.
The Umno deputy president won the seat uncontested after PKR candidate Dr S Streram was not allowed to file his nomination papers on April 28.
Mohamad has 14 days to file an appeal with the Federal Court.
However, immediately after the verdict, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said BN would field Mohamad to defend the seat. - Mkini
