PETALING JAYA: Former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak claims that news headlines about him saying that Malaysia was "cheated" by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho do not tell the whole story.
On his Facebook page, Najib said that his interview with a local Malay daily should be viewed in full as it was "easy to get the wrong perception when we only read the headline".
In the interview with Sinar Harian on Thursday (Nov 22), he was asked by the host if it can now be admitted that Malaysia was cheated by Low, better known as Jho Low, in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
Najib answered: "Yes, that is the conclusion if we take into account what we know today."
In his Facebook post later on Thursday (Nov 22) evening, Najib said that those who had been following developments on 1MDB know that Low was found to have colluded with the top management of Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Co (IPIC) and investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc to transfer funds to himself.
"Yesterday, it was reported that IPIC has sued Goldman Sachs for damages due to allegations of conspiracy to cheat IPIC.
"If all these allegations are true, then Jho Low may have conspired with Goldman Sachs and the top management of IPIC to cheat IPIC," he posted.
Najib urged the people to watch the full interview to understand the whole context of his answer instead of just focusing on one part.
In the interview which was aired live on social media, Najib also accused Goldman Sachs, lawyers and auditors for failing to protect the country's interests in relation to 1MDB.- Star
